Eating for Two: Fact or Fiction?

May 23, 2010

Congratulations, you’re pregnant! All that time you usually spend thinking about quick weight loss tips can now be spent dreaming about strollers, car seats, and nurseries because you are eating for two, right? Now is definitely not the time to worry about weight gain. Throw those weight loss supplements like Acai extract and Slimmer-X out the window. The average pregnant women gains 25 to 35 pounds throughout her pregnancy. This includes the weight of the baby, placenta, amniotic fluid, extra blood, etc. While you can comfortably gain up to 3 pounds a month, you should be mindful of what you feed your little one. After all, your baby’s development and growth is fully dependent on the nutrition that you provide.

Here are a few guidelines for healthy eating during pregnancy:

  1. Hit all the food groups. Proteins, fats, carbohydrates, and fruits and vegetables are all important. Vary your diet and eat wholesome meals to ensure that you provide your baby with all the essential vitamins and minerals that it needs.
  2. Remember that you only need to eat an extra 300 calories a day throughout your pregnancy. Don’t overdo it, especially during your last trimester when your uterus is pressing on your stomach. You might enjoy the food while you are eating, but you won’t be happy later.
  3. Take a multi-vitamin. Most pharmacies carry multi-vitamins that are especially formulated for pregnant women. Be sure to check with your doctor before taking any vitamins that are not specifically designed for pregnancy as too much Vitamin A can be harmful to your baby.
  4. Allow yourself regular treats, but always control your portion sizes. There is nothing wrong with enjoying yourself, but don’t let it get out of hand. Empty calories only contribute to excess weight gain that you will be dying to lose once the baby is born.
  5. Drink plenty of water. It’s easy to become dehydrated when you are pregnant which can be dangerous to your baby. Never leave home without a water bottle and sip it throughout the day.
