Healthy Soup, Healthy Heart, Healthy Body
March 4, 2010
Trying to lose weight, boost heart health, and lower cholesterol? There's no better way to achieve all three of these things than by enjoying some hearty soups this winter. Soups provide the following benefits:
• They're (usually) very easy to make.
• They're (usually) hot, comforting, and filling.
• They're (usually) healthy. Especially if you're taking a diet pill like generic Xenical, the last thing you'll want to do is flood your body with excess fat. Soups are generally low in fat, making sure that your heart (and stomach, in the case of Xenical) stays in tiptop shape.
I say "usually" because of course there are exceptions. Cream of anything soup is not healthy. Soup filled with fried wontons or loaded with fried anything is not healthy. Certain soups are difficult to make, though those are generally the less healthy soups anyways.
Need some easy, healthy soup ideas? Read on.
1. Vegetable soup – This soup really couldn't be easier. Dump vegetables in a pot of boiling water, add a little salt (or salt substitute if you're trying to lower LDL cholesterol) and then wait for the vegetables to soften and for the liquid of the soup to get a little color in it. Good veggies for a veggie soup: onions, carrots, zucchini, celery, and squash. Want something more filling? Add potatoes, sweet potatoes, beans, and corn.
2. Chicken soup – Include in the above some shredded chicken breast.
3. Lentil soup – Lightly sauté onions, carrots, and celery, then add water or low sodium chicken stock and 1 cup of lentils. Cook until soft, about 45 minutes. Either blend with an immersion blender or keep chunky. Lentil soup is great for heart health. If you're taking Lipitor or another effective cholesterol lowering medication, your doctor may recommend that you eat a lot of non-animal proteins, including lentils and beans. You can also add rice to a lentil soup (brown rice is best) or switch out the lentils for split peas…or try a combo!
