How to Sneak More Water into Your Diet

April 22, 2010

t We all know by now that drinking water is essential to weight loss. Especially if you’re going to invest in taking diet pills (like Xenical or SlimmerX), you’re going to need to make sure that you tank up on water. And yet sometimes it’s just so hard to drink down enough of the bland stuff to hit the daily requirement. If you love water, then great—you’re ahead of the game; but even water lovers don’t quite drink as much as they should. So how much should you be drinking? There are two ways to measure—the classic eight cups a day is still a reliable amount.

The other way: Drink half your body weight in ounces. That means that if you weigh 160 pounds, you should be drinking 80 fluid ounces of water every day, or 10 cups of water. This way sort of makes more sense; there’s no way a tiny five foot 110 pound woman can or should drink as much as a six foot 200 pound man. So here are some tips for getting more water into your diet: 1. Carry around a water bottle. Keep one in your car, one in your purse, one in your backpack, one by your bed, and one by the couch. That way, if you get a moment of inspiration to drink, laziness to go get the water won’t get you down. Oftentimes people don’t drink because they’re simply too lazy to drink. 2. Drink decaffeinated tea. Make a pot of herbal tea and drink it either hot or iced. 3. Eat a lot of soup. While the salt in soup can cancel out the benefits of the water in the soup, a low sodium version can be a great way to hydrate your body and get more fluids in your system. 4. Add a splash of flavor to your water. If you can’t tolerate plain water, add a splash of apple juice or other 100% juice options to your water. Also, adding a calorie-free drink mix (like Crystal Light) can help non-water drinkers get more water down.
