Key Nutrients for Maintaining a Healthy Weight
June 14, 2009
Vitamins and minerals are essential to all cellular functions, including many aspects of how your body responds to protein, carbohydrates and fats which are key to losing fat. Here are a couple of key nutrients which can help you achieve and successful and long term weight loss:
Calcium: Recent studies have shown that getting enough calcium in your diet can help you drop weight too; apparently calcium stored in fat cells plays a crucial role in regulating how fat is stored and broken down by the body—the more calcium there is in a fat cell, the more fat it will burn. So flood those cells!
Magnesium: In one study, people in the study who ate magnesium-rich diets were protected against developing metabolic syndrome, a group of risk factors linked to cardiovascular disease and diabetes, including elevated blood pressure, low levels of HDL cholesterol, elevated triglycerides, elevated blood sugar levels, and abdominal obesity.
Omega 3: Studies suggest that overweight people who follow a weight loss program that includes exercise tend to achieve better control over their blood sugar and cholesterol levels when fish rich in omega-3 fatty acids is a staple in their low-fat diet. If you ‘re not a big consumer of these fish, consider buying fish oil in capsules or pick up a bottle of flax or hemp oil.
Vitamin C: Researchers there have found a direct correlation between the presence of vitamin C in the blood stream and the capability of the body to burn fat as energy, as vitamin C plays a role in fat oxidation which has a considerable role to play in losing weight. According to the researchers, individuals consuming sufficient amounts of vitamin C burn a whopping 30% more fat during moderate exercise than those who consume insufficient amounts.
Chromium picolinate: Chromium picolinate works by improves carbohydrate and fat metabolism, which can help with proper weight management can decrease high blood pressure and cholesterol, while promoting healthy growth hormone functions.
