Recession Diet

April 10, 2009

It’s not really a fad diet in the classic sense of the term, but the fact is, there’s a recession going on and it’s definitely affecting the food choices of many people out there, all over the world and usually for the worse.  Cheap food is most often junky food and or brands with lesser quality ingredients.  But inexpensive doesn’t have to be cheap in quality.

Here are some ideas for going on a healthy recession diet:

Purchase inexpensive staple foods such as beans.  A pound of dried beans can be purchased for cheap, provide a lot of nutrition and protein, and can go a very long way in a variety of different meals.

Make frugal choices to begin with, and choose the high-quality version of that item. For example, choose organic beans or fresh herbs and spices to give them a rich flavor. It is frugal and you’ve already made a great cost-saving choice by going with beans and flavoring them up the way you like them best–a great way to keep yourself eating them.

Make a grocery list. Once you know what you’re eating, make out a grocery list containing exactly what you need for the coming week –only what you need. And when at the store, only take stuff to your cart that appears on the list.

Make meals in advance and buy foods on sale. If you find something really tasty on sale, make a bunch of meals with that food, freeze them, and enjoy them later. Then you don’t just get to enjoy the benefits of the sale now, but for as long as the meals last in your freezer.

Not a cook?  Learn a little bit at a time and pay attention to what you like that also is healthy (like tomatoes, onions and garlic). Use those in abundance, especially when they’re on sale.
